The ESPY Collection

Between 2001 and 2006, ESPN commissioned Rick Chapman to engage in his intimate portraiture style with a select group of celebrity-athlete ESPY award winners. Printed in a limited edition and signed by the athletes and Chapman, the prints have been sold at numerous auctions to successfully raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the V-Foundation for Cancer Research. In addition to individual sales, many prints were acquired by prominent museum and private photography collections in the the USA, including the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, acquiring an entire portfolio of 40 prints for the museum’s permanent collection. The NPG curators have utilized the ESPY Collection portraits in many prominant exhibitions and publications since receiving the prints in 2013.

This video documents some of Rick's "Meet the Artist" talk given at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in September 2015, focused on the current exhibition titled "Eye Pop - The Celebrity Gaze". The video also includes interview cuts highlighting Rick's approach to portraiture and his 40 ESPY Collection portraits which are part of the National Portrait Gallery's permanent collection.
